Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012 preview

The UK’s premier autumn gardening festival is the perfect day out for all garden lovers! So what’s new at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012?

Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012 (www.flowershow.org.uk) takes place at the Great Yorkshire Showground later this week from 14th to 16th September. Harrogate’s prestigious autumn gardening event offers thousands of gardeners the chance to celebrate the harvest, as well as looking forward to the new growing season with inspirational plants and products to perfectly suit any space or budget.

This horticultural hoopla opens daily from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Tickets cost £15 on Friday or Saturday, £14 on Sunday. Under 16s go free on any day, if they’re accompanied by an adult. Show catalogues will be available to buy on-site for £3.

Flower Power

Solopress.com’s own top five picks of nature’s beautiful bounty to be exhibited at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012 are:

1. Busy Bees
It’s been a fantastic British summer of sport, but not so much fun for our poor, hungry bees. Members of the Harrogate and Ripon Beekeepers’ Association have been making up for a lack of nectar, due to the exceptionally cold and wet summer this year, by feeding a sugar and water syrup to their bees. Despite this sugary setback, the beekeepers’ still expect to have around 200 jars of honey on display at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012.

2. Know Your Onions
The Heaviest Onion Competition is just one of the fiercely fought contests at every Harrogate Autumn Flower Show. Will anyone beat the word record set by champion grower Peter Glazebrook at last year’s show? They’ve got to top a whopping 17lb 15.5oz of awesome onion-ness, in case you were wondering!

3. Lush Landscapes
Two of landscape designer Jason Loh’s (www.jasonloh.co.uk) designs for the Garden Border competition, in the ‘Section of a Garden’ and ‘Traditional Garden Border’ categories, have been accepted by the judges of the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012. You can see a sneak preview of these garden designs now in Jason Loh’s Facebook photo album. Good luck, JL!

4. Daisy Chain
Teams of experts from Kitchen Garden Live, Garden Roadshow and Garden Advice Bureau will be on hand at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012 for talks, demonstrations and to answer all of your gardening questions. They’ll be able to solve any tricky horticulture problems, including how to cope with the Great British weather. You may even get to appear in Carol Vorderman’s new ITV1 food show – she’s looking for Britain’s best loved dish. Got any mouth-watering family recipes you’d like to share?

5. Coming Up Roses
Rosa ‘Geoffrey Smith’ is a new, creamy yellow coloured rose that’s officially due to be launched at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2012. Dedicated to one of Britain’s best-loved gardeners on TV and radio, this climbing rose flowers from May to October with highly fragrant blooms. Prior to his death in 2009, Geoffrey Smith was a presenter for BBC Gardeners’ World and a panellist on Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time for nearly 20 years. Geoffrey’s love of gardening was possibly only rivalled by his love of Yorkshire.

Good to see the plight of the Bee being picked for Solopress’ top five. We can all do ‘our bit’ for the Bee by planting some of their favourite plants that survive easily in our garden’s. Such as Lavender, sunflowers and honeysuckle.

    • Solopress says:

Great flower tips Susan, but no Bee-gonias? ;-)
